Teaching Friends to Throw Pottery
These four pages are demonstrations of friends throwing pottery for the first time.  There is little educational value here, but it does demonstrate the difficulty beginners have throwing pots.  We started with one pound ball of clay.

The first gallery here is the expert demonstrating how to turn a ball of clay into a 8 inch vase.  The next three galleries are some of my best friends trying to turn a one pound ball of clay into something resembling a piece of pottery ... even the slightest resemblence of pottery will be a success.

Making a ball of clay to put on the wheel.  This is roughly a 3-pound ball of clay.

Once the ball is on the wheel and centered it must be opened up.

Sometimes a little effort is required to keep it uniform in shape.

Once the clay ball is opened then we begin to bring it up.

I always bring the clay to it's full height before shaping it.

Once we have the height then we begin the process of shaping it as we desire.

Once shaped we begin the process of cleaning it up.

Some final trimming around the edges and top is always required

And walla, after a few minutes of work we have a nicely shaped 8-inch vase.
